When notetaking in mathematics it is not usually possible to paraphrase or summarise the content as:

  • Mathematics is already in a compact notation
  • It usually takes a greater time than available in a class to internalise mathematical concepts to a point at which a more concise notation than that already in use could be considered.

The student will usually require a precise copy of the exact symbols and structures written. Anything added verbally by the lecturer may need to be added as annotation.
